Two Newspapers Drop Print, Go All Twitter!

From E&P:

April Fool's madness reigned this morning, and it wasn't just because of the fears over the latest computer worm. Both the venerable Guardian in London and the alt-weekly Mountain Express in Asheville, N.C. announced they were dropping print and going all Twitter.

The Guardian said it had finally listened to experts who claimed every story today can be told "in 140 characters."

The Asheville paper even produced a video, calling itself "the nation's first Twaper."

Meanwhile, the stodgy Economist announced it was opening a scary financial theme park, Econoland.

San Serriffe

image In 1977 the British newspaper The Guardian published a special seven-page supplement devoted to San Serriffe, a small republic located in the Indian Ocean consisting of several semi-colon-shaped islands. A series of articles affectionately described the geography and culture of this obscure nation. Its two main islands were named Upper Caisse and Lower Caisse. Its capital was Bodoni, and its leader was General Pica. The Guardian's phones rang all day as readers sought more information about the idyllic holiday spot. Few noticed that everything about the island was named after printer's terminology. The success of this hoax is widely credited with launching the enthusiasm for April Foolery that gripped the British tabloids in subsequent decades. Sphere: Related Content

April Fool Jokes a Laughing Matter for Media

Media around the world regaled their audiences with stories of stretched French presidents and bisexual James Bonds on Tuesday, proving the tradition of April Fool's jokes was alive and kicking.

Britain's Daily Telegraph printed pictures of penguins apparently flying to the Amazon, while many papers ran a spoof story saying luxury carmaker BMW had invented a model that electrocuted dogs which tried to relieve themselves against its wheels. [Click for MORE]

Big Laughs at ZellCoMediaEnterprises Inc.

Check out tribune.com and you'll notice that the company's name has been changed to ZellCoMediaEnterprises Inc. "H---, I put $315 million into this thing, and we're on the hook for $13 billion—the least I ought to get is my name on the company's stationery," Zell said in a news release. The Web site also has an electronic "TipJar" labeled "Hey buddy, help a paper out?" And if you haven't figured it out by now, yes, it is an April Fool's prank, though ZellCoMedia doesn’t seem like that much of a stretch. From the release, courtesy of the WSJ
The company, which publishes nine daily newspapers in some of the country's top markets, also unveiled plans to go completely paperless, using edible ink and a newly designed licorice printing system. "Now our newspapers can be put to good use for something other than news, information, and lining bird cages," said Randy Michaels, executive vice president of the company's broadcasting and internet divisions, who's also fooling around with newspapers. "Although I'm told it's a little dry, a family of four will be able to get a week's worth of nourishment off the Sunday edition of the Chicago Tribune."

I'm sure they're just howling on 1st Street. [LAO Biz]
