Sources at Los Angeles television stations KCBS-TV (Channel 2) and KCAL-TV (Channel 9) confirmed that their stations have fallen victim to the same series of newsroom cuts that have affected other CBS owned-and-operated affiliates throughout the country, the Daily News reports.
Among those departing are Harold Greene and Ann Martin, who co-anchor the KCAL newscast at 4 p.m. and the KCBS newscast at 6 p.m. Both have decided to retire when their contracts expire on June 1. In all, fewer than 20 have lost their jobs at the two local stations.
Other CBS stations were reporting similar cutbacks: Approximately 20 staffers at WBZ-TV in Boston, 18 at WBBM-TV in Chicago (including Diann Burns, reportedly the highest-paid anchor in the city with a $2 million salary) and 14 at KPIX-TV in San Francisco, including 28-year veteran Manny Ramos. Dallas' stations, CBS11 and TXA21, were expected to lose 20 employees between them.
Other cities affected include Sacramento's KOVR-TV, Denver's KCNC-TV, Miami's KFOR-TV and New York's WCBS-TV.
Five employees of CBS' national morning newsmagazine "The Early Show" have also been let go. Altogether, the cuts and layoffs reportedly amount to about 1 percent of the CBS News workforce. [LABJ]
